This story was inspired by a dream :) I hope you enjoy it.
They slipped outside with two bags and hopped on an off-road vehicle before anyone noticed. Quickly turning on the engine, he floored the accelerator and they were off.
"What's going on? Where are we going?"
"We're on our own. We can't trust Antonio anymore."
She looked at him, shock written on her face. "What do you mean? What happened?"
"I went out to go to the bathroom last night. I overheard Antonio talking with the boss. He was going to sell us out."
"What?! No, that's not true. Antonio?! He's been there with us since the beginning! Why would he betray us? Matt, are you absolutely certain of this?"
"Yes. I heard them myself, Nikki. I know you've always trusted him, but my job is to protect you no matter the cost."
She looked out the window and didn't speak any more throughout the rest of the ride.
In about two hours, they reached a hideout. Matt took both the bags while Nikki followed. He gestured to her to be quiet while he checked the parameters. When he was sure it was safe, he beckoned for her to follow. They entered the safe house and the first thing Nikki noticed was how cozy and warm it made her feel.
"Who's house is this?"
"Mine."
"Yours? I thought this was a safe house."
"This is the safest place you can be right now. Your room is straight down the hallway to the right if you want to freshen up. I'll prepare us some food."
"Thanks."
He went into the pantry and searched for something to put together for them. He decided to go with scrambled eggs, toast, and coffee. He set the coffee to brew while he whipped up the eggs in a pan. When she came out half an hour later, her stomach rumbled from the delicious aroma of food coming from the kitchen.
"Sit down and eat. I'm sorry this is all we have for right now."
"No, this is great. Thank you for making it. It smells great."
She picked up her fork and tasted the eggs and bit into the toast. She looked up when she noticed he wasn't eating. Instead, he was looking at her intently.
"Is there something wrong? Why aren't you eating?"
"I'm not hungry."
Without another word, he left her. She only heard him shut the door to his bedroom. What's gotten into him?
In his room, he paced. It was up to him to keep her safe. His mission had always been to protect her, but now something else is happening inside him. When he looked at her, he saw someone beautiful and fragile. At the same time, he knew how stubborn she could be, and she had a very strong will. When she spoke, all he could see was her mouth and how he wished he could taste her sweetness.
Deep in thought, he heard a soft knock on his door.
"Matt?"
He opened the door and looked into her soft brown eyes. She smelled of soap and sunshine.
"I just wanted to make sure you're okay."
Emotions played in his blue eyes, unsure of what to do next. Throwing caution out the window, he framed her face with his hands and slowly brought his lips down to hers.
